Jacqueline Avanthay Strus

Background

Jack grew up in a small Métis community surrounded by First Nations reserves and now lives in Winnipeg, with their family. I acknowledge and am grateful for living on the lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Dakota, Dene, Métis and Oji-Cree Nations.

Education

Jack received their Nursing diploma from the Collège Universitaire de Saint-Boniface in 2004, their BSN from the University of Ottawa in 2009 and their MSN from the same institution in 2019. They are currently completing their doctorate in nursing at the University of Ottawa with a focus on two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, etc. communities during their transition to parenthood.

Career

Jack has been employed at l’Université de Saint-Boniface since 2012, first as a lab and simulation instructor, followed by a professor position. Previously they have worked in a variety of settings. For more detail see https://ustboniface.ca/javanthaystrus/recherche-et-creation

Interests

Jack has been passionate about social justice and health equity since they began their nursing career working with marginalized populations. Working in both rural and urban settings, it was staggering how the social and geopolitical locations can contribute to health inequities. One of their passions is focusing on the ecological determinants of health, since a difference can be made in environmental health inequities.
