Summary:

The Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) model is an “all teach, all learn” training framework based on mentoring and peer support. The overarching objective is to share support, guidance, and feedback in service of the dissemination and implementation of good practices. As our collective understanding of the issues and opportunities related to climate and environmental change and health deepens, the ECHO format can offer members of the healthcare community the support they need to navigate the nuances of sustainability work.

The Climate, Health, & Sustainable Care ECHO will serve as a collaborative space for people in the Canadian healthcare sector to discuss, troubleshoot, and celebrate efforts to provide climate resilient and sustainable care across settings and specialties.  Each session will feature a topic of interest grounded by experts in the field and brought to life by case studies shared by participants.

Topics will be related to one of the following two themes:

  • Confronting acute and chronic climate risks: Explores climate challenges for health and health systems, including specific health risks and the range of shocks and stresses to which health systems must adapt.
  • Implementing climate mitigation and adaptation in practice: Explores a range of healthcare practices and identifies the specific adaptation and mitigation measures arising in each.

Each session will feature a short lecture on the topic at hand followed by relevant case study presentations by participants (to be arranged in advance); these can include:

  • Case studies of the implementation of successful projects/efforts
  • Experiences from the “messy middle” of implementing change
  • Contemplated changes in a particularly challenging area/topic for which advice/guidance is sought

An in-depth discussion of each case will yield recommendations for presenters where they are sought, and insights on and inspiration for sustainability efforts for all participants, which they can in turn share with their own networks to spread good sustainability practice.

Learning Objectives:

Through weekly Zoom meetings featuring brief lecturers, case study presentations, and discussions, participants in the Climate, Health, & Sustainable Care ECHO will:

  • Develop a solid understanding of the range of opportunities to enhance the resilience and sustainability of health services and systems
  • Contribute their own experience and ideas to establishing good practice in climate action and sustainable healthcare
  • Gain inspiration and build confidence to implement their own climate and sustainability projects
  • Grow a network of mentors and potential collaborators they can engage to support their efforts

Registration:

Please register here. You’ll be prompted to indicate whether you’d be willing to share a case study during a session.

Upon registration, you’ll receive Outlook invitations to all 10 ECHO sessions. We’d love to see you at every session, but an agenda will be circulated in mid-September so you can prioritize the sessions most relevant to your scope of practice.

The Climate, Health, & Sustainable Care ECHO is brought to you by the Collaborative Centre for Climate, Health & Sustainable Care in partnership with CASCADES.
