National Environmental Justice Strategy: A Conversation with Amanda Monforton

From the Canadian Coalition for Environmental and Climate Justice

We invite you to join us for an important conversation regarding a national environmental justice strategy with guest speaker Amanda Monforton, Director of Policy Development within Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Strategic Policy Branch. Amanda and her team are leading the development of the strategy. This meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 5 pm EDT.

About Amanda Monforton

Amanda Monforton is Algonquin First Nation from Pikwakanagan, and the Director of Policy Development within the Strategic Policy Branch of Environment and Climate Change Canada. Amanda and her team are leading the development of the national environmental justice strategy, which is already underway.

The registration link to the meeting can be found here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAqc-GvrjguE9R_T1GIYdC9M7KuIZpuOS9V#/registration. Please ensure you register before the meeting.

Why This Conversation Matters

This is a unique opportunity for you to:

  • Learn: Gain insight into the strategy’s development and implications
  • Ask Questions: Seek clarification and answers from those leading the strategy’s development
  • Provide Input: Share your perspectives and expertise

The national environmental justice strategy will impact all of Canada; therefore, it is
important to ensure that a diversity of voices are not only present and included, but actively
engaged in this dialogue.

Important Note

While the national environmental justice strategy is mandated by Bill C-226, National
Strategy Respecting Environmental Racism and Environmental Justice Act, it is not
contingent upon the bill passing. In other words, while the legislation requires the
development of “a national strategy to promote efforts across Canada to advance
environmental justice and to assess, prevent and address environmental racism,” the
national environmental justice strategy can be developed even if the bill does not pass.
Nevertheless, we hope that Bill C-226 passes without further delay.
