SUMMARY:European Climate Resilient Health Systems Course Day 6
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nHealth systems\, including hospitals\, are on the frontlines of climate change\, bearing the costs of increasing disease burdens and more frequent extreme weather events while simultaneously inadvertently contributing to negative environmental and climate-related impacts. Climate change poses a myriad of threats to health systems and communities. These risks vary depending on geographic location\, the intensity and magnitude of specific climate-related hazards (floods\, droughts\, severe storms\, extreme heat\, wildfires\, disease outbreaks)\, the level of exposure to the hazard\, and the level of existing vulnerability (e.g.\, access to mental healthcare). Health systems which have transformed their structural and operational practices to confront these challenges have seen enormous benefits in terms of increasing their resilience in the face of climate challenges while simultaneously reducing operational costs. \nDATE: January 28 – April 8\, 2025 (Tuesdays)\nTIME: 12:00 – 1:30 PM Central European Time (CET)\nThe goal of this 10-week course is to equip health professionals\, federal\, regional and local health systems planners\, hospital administrators\, emergency planners\, sustainability officers\, public health officials\, and others with the knowledge and tools needed to prepare health systems for climate change. This includes how to apply best practices to assess health system vulnerabilities and adaptation options\, measure and monitor the climate resilience and environmental sustainability of health systems\, and undertake health system greening\, all while integrating health equity and undertaking broad stakeholder engagement. \nAudience\nAll professionals interested in climate and health are welcome! \nLive Course Primary Language: English  \n\nCERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS\n\nParticipants who attend >70% of the live sessions and pass the final exam with a score of >70% at the end of the course will be awarded a Certificate of Participation in climate and health from ASPHER/GCCHE. \nParticipants must join each class session using their personal unique Zoom links and complete the final exam using the email address used to initially register for the course. Attendance will be automatically recorded during the live Zoom sessions. The exam will be sent out on the final day of class via email. The exam link starts on April 9 at 6:00 PM CEST and will close on April 11 at 6:00 PM CEST. The format of the final exam will consist of a combination of multiple choice and true/false questions. Participants should be prepared to take the exam in one sitting\, as the system does not take the answers if you answer the exam at various times during the 48 hours that the link will be open. Once you finish your exam you will find the Course Evaluation Survey. \nCourse Structure\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe course will consist of once-weekly live-virtual sessions (90 minutes)\, offered in English. Each session will consist of 50 minutes of “theory/foundation” followed by 1-2 case studies\, representing instances across Europe. There will be a live question and answer which will be monitored by the program team and questions will be consolidated and addressed to expert lecturers. Resources such as frameworks and suggested readings will be provided to all course participants. Video recordings will be available following each session for asynchronous view. \n\n\n  \n  \nSession Topics & Resources\nSession 1: JAN 28\, Health Systems in a Changing Climate: Overview and Introduction to the Course \nSession 2: FEB 4\, Methods for Assessing Vulnerability and Adaptation of Health Systems \nSession 3: FEB 11\, Health System Emergency Prevention\, Preparedness and Response \nSession 4: FEB 18\, Health and Economic Benefits of Sustainable Health Systems \nSession 5: FEB 25\, Opportunities and Guidance for Lowering the Carbon Footprint of Health Systems \nSession 6: MAR 11\, Health Early Warning Systems and Surveillance in a Changing Climate \nSession 7: MAR 18\, Incorporating Sustainability into Health Technology Assessment \nSession 8: MAR 25\, Measuring\, Monitoring and Evaluating Health Systems Resilience \nSession 9: APR 01\, Justice\, Governance\, Health Systems\, and Climate Action \nSession 10: APR 08\, Health Communication and Education in a Changing Climate \nCONTACT: dm3952@columbia.edu(link sends e-mail)\, Danielly Magalhães she/her \n \nMore Information\nhttps://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/programs/global-consortium-climate-health-education/courses/european-climate-resilient-health-systems-course \nRegistration \nhttps://columbiacuimc.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Arny4CgFSK65A_SV7Q6UYw#/registration \n  \n
