SUMMARY:European Climate Resilient Health Systems Course Day 10
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nHealth systems\, including hospitals\, are on the frontlines of climate change\, bearing the costs of increasing disease burdens and more frequent extreme weather events while simultaneously inadvertently contributing to negative environmental and climate-related impacts. Climate change poses a myriad of threats to health systems and communities. These risks vary depending on geographic location\, the intensity and magnitude of specific climate-related hazards (floods\, droughts\, severe storms\, extreme heat\, wildfires\, disease outbreaks)\, the level of exposure to the hazard\, and the level of existing vulnerability (e.g.\, access to mental healthcare). Health systems which have transformed their structural and operational practices to confront these challenges have seen enormous benefits in terms of increasing their resilience in the face of climate challenges while simultaneously reducing operational costs. \nDATE: January 28 – April 8\, 2025 (Tuesdays)\nTIME: 12:00 – 1:30 PM Central European Time (CET)\nThe goal of this 10-week course is to equip health professionals\, federal\, regional and local health systems planners\, hospital administrators\, emergency planners\, sustainability officers\, public health officials\, and others with the knowledge and tools needed to prepare health systems for climate change. This includes how to apply best practices to assess health system vulnerabilities and adaptation options\, measure and monitor the climate resilience and environmental sustainability of health systems\, and undertake health system greening\, all while integrating health equity and undertaking broad stakeholder engagement. \nAudience\nAll professionals interested in climate and health are welcome! \nLive Course Primary Language: English  \n\nCERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS\n\nParticipants who attend >70% of the live sessions and pass the final exam with a score of >70% at the end of the course will be awarded a Certificate of Participation in climate and health from ASPHER/GCCHE. \nParticipants must join each class session using their personal unique Zoom links and complete the final exam using the email address used to initially register for the course. Attendance will be automatically recorded during the live Zoom sessions. The exam will be sent out on the final day of class via email. The exam link starts on April 9 at 6:00 PM CEST and will close on April 11 at 6:00 PM CEST. The format of the final exam will consist of a combination of multiple choice and true/false questions. Participants should be prepared to take the exam in one sitting\, as the system does not take the answers if you answer the exam at various times during the 48 hours that the link will be open. Once you finish your exam you will find the Course Evaluation Survey. \nCourse Structure\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe course will consist of once-weekly live-virtual sessions (90 minutes)\, offered in English. Each session will consist of 50 minutes of “theory/foundation” followed by 1-2 case studies\, representing instances across Europe. There will be a live question and answer which will be monitored by the program team and questions will be consolidated and addressed to expert lecturers. Resources such as frameworks and suggested readings will be provided to all course participants. Video recordings will be available following each session for asynchronous view. \n\n\n  \n  \nSession Topics & Resources\nSession 1: JAN 28\, Health Systems in a Changing Climate: Overview and Introduction to the Course \nSession 2: FEB 4\, Methods for Assessing Vulnerability and Adaptation of Health Systems \nSession 3: FEB 11\, Health System Emergency Prevention\, Preparedness and Response \nSession 4: FEB 18\, Health and Economic Benefits of Sustainable Health Systems \nSession 5: FEB 25\, Opportunities and Guidance for Lowering the Carbon Footprint of Health Systems \nSession 6: MAR 11\, Health Early Warning Systems and Surveillance in a Changing Climate \nSession 7: MAR 18\, Incorporating Sustainability into Health Technology Assessment \nSession 8: MAR 25\, Measuring\, Monitoring and Evaluating Health Systems Resilience \nSession 9: APR 01\, Justice\, Governance\, Health Systems\, and Climate Action \nSession 10: APR 08\, Health Communication and Education in a Changing Climate \nCONTACT: dm3952@columbia.edu(link sends e-mail)\, Danielly Magalhães she/her \n \nMore Information\nhttps://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/programs/global-consortium-climate-health-education/courses/european-climate-resilient-health-systems-course \nRegistration \nhttps://columbiacuimc.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Arny4CgFSK65A_SV7Q6UYw#/registration \n  \n

SUMMARY:Planetary Health & Sustainable Care ECHO
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThe next Planetary Health & Sustainable Care ECHO cycle is beginning in April! Join us starting April 8 as we explore resource stewardship as a key component in the delivery of high-quality\, responsible\, and truly sustainable care.  \n\n\nRegistration is now open for the Planetary Health & Sustainable Care ECHO!\n\n\n\nRegistration is open on a rolling basis\, meaning those interested can register at any time throughout the cycle and attend any number of sessions. \nOnce registered\, you’ll receive a calendar invitation to the entire cycle (all 8 sessions). \n\n\nAbout the Planetary Health & Sustainable Care ECHO\n\n\n\n\nWithin the Canadian health sector\, there is growing recognition of the impacts of climate change on health and health systems\, and the many ways in which the health sector itself is contributing to climate change and other environmental problems. Emerging sustainability champions have been calling for change as they initiate climate adaptation\, resilience\, and mitigation projects at all levels of the health system. As our collective understanding of the issues and opportunities related to climate change deepens\, members of the healthcare community need support as they navigate the nuances of sustainability work. \nThe Planetary Health & Sustainable Care ECHO offers a collaborative space for people in the Canadian healthcare sector to discuss\, troubleshoot\, and celebrate efforts to provide climate resilient and responsible care across settings and specialties. \nCycle Overview\nThe ability to deliver high-quality care and extend the responsibilities of health services to future generations requires careful stewardship of resources and consideration of the broader impacts of healthcare delivery on the environment\, and the determinants of health. When care is provided\, we must ensure it is appropriate to avoid harmful overuse and underuse. And when appropriate care is provided\, we must ensure it is as sustainable as possible to enhance the health sector’s climate resilience and reduce its contributions to climate change and other environmental problems.  These efforts are deeply tied to achieving quality co-benefits\, such as improving patient outcomes and reducing costs. \nIn this ECHO cycle\, we will explore resource stewardship as a key component in the delivery of high-quality\, truly sustainable care. Through brief lectures and case presentations from a variety of sites and settings\, we will consider the following two themes: \nRETHINK: Considering practice and operational changes that reduce the use of unnecessary products and services \n\nPossible topics include testing\, prescribing\, PPE use\, supply management\, and more\n\nREPLACE: Considering more sustainable alternatives to environmentally impactful products and services \n\nPossible topics include reusable products\, circular economy policies and procurement practices\, sustainable care pathways\, food services\, digital health technologies\, and more\n\nTopics will be determined in part based on case presentation proposals submitted by participants. A final agenda will be circulated in advance of the first session. \nLearning Objectives\nThrough weekly Zoom meetings\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the relationship between climate change\, health\, and health systems\nIdentify opportunities to integrate resilience and sustainability into their work\nLeverage lessons from the field to enhance their sustainability and resilience initiatives\nGain insight into how their sustainability efforts connect with similar initiatives\, and with the larger landscape of climate-resilient and sustainable healthcare\nLocate resources and support for implementing sustainability and resilience initiatives\n\nWho it’s for:\nInterdisciplinarity is key to the successful planning and implementation of climate mitigation and adaptation efforts. The ECHO is therefore open to all members of the Canadian healthcare community\, including frontline care providers\, trainees\, QI and IT experts\, managers\, leaders\, patient partners\, and others. \nHow it works:\nEach session features a topic of interest grounded by experts in the field and brought to life by case studies shared by participants (to be arranged in advance); these can include: \n\nThe implementation of completed projects/efforts (can be successful or failed projects)\nExperiences from the “messy middle” of implementing change\nContemplated changes in a particularly challenging area/topic for which advice/guidance is sought\n\nAn in-depth discussion of each case will yield recommendations for presenters where they are sought\, and insights on and inspiration for sustainability efforts for all participants\, which they can in turn share with their own networks to spread good sustainability practice. \nAny resources discussed during a session will be shared via the ECHO website\, where participants can also find discussion boards and summaries of cases and recommendations. \nWhile participants are encouraged to attend every session to grow their network and better explore the nuances of sustainability implementation\, the syllabus will be posted in advance to allow for attendance at sessions of interest. \nHow to sign up:\nPlease register via this link. If you’re working on or know of a relevant case\, please note this in your registration form! We review all case suggestions and will contact you for further details if there is strong alignment with a session topic. \nUpon registration\, you’ll receive a calendar invitation to all 8 ECHO sessions. We’d love to see you at every session but understand that that may not always be possible. The cycle schedule will be shared in advance so that you can prioritize the sessions most relevant to your scope of practice. \nAccreditation:\nThis continuing professional development activity is accredited for College of Family Physicians of Canada Mainpro+® – Group Learning credits & Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada – Section 1 credits under the auspices of Continuing Professional Development\, Temerty Faculty of Medicine\, University of Toronto and Dalla Lana School of Public Health\, University of Toronto. \n\n\n\nMore Information\nhttps://cascadescanada.ca/training/echo/ \nRegistration \nPlanetary Health & Sustainable Care ECHO Registration
