Canadians believe climate should factor in new East Coast LNG export facilities development

East Coast LNG poll

Recently, Canadian media have reported that Canada is considering a new East Coast LNG export facility to ‘help’ Europe. (Never mind that research shows that Europe’s energy woes will be largely resolved by other means — before any such facility could be built.) Last week news broke that Germany’s chancellor will visit Canada in August, perhaps to announce a new LNG deal.

As media chatter picks up, we need your help to amplify a new poll that shows Canadians believe climate should be a deciding factor on whether or not to approve a new gas export facility.

Key findings from the Abacus Data poll, conducted June 17-22, include:

  • A majority of Canadians believe climate impacts should be a deciding factor in whether Canada approves or rejects a new LNG export facility – double those who believe climate shouldn’t be a factor.
  • More Canadians believe Canada should not approve a new East Coast gas export facility because it would conflict with climate goals, compared to those who disagree.
  • More Canadians oppose federal subsidies for a new East Coast gas export facility than those open to federal subsidies of it.
  • More Canadians want the federal government to urgently address the climate crisis, even amidst rising inflation – than those who only want the government to prioritize inflation.
  • Bonus stat for those campaigning against fossil fuel subsidies – 53% of Canadians are disappointed the PM has yet to deliver on a 2015 promise to end fossil fuel subsidies.
