CANE Statement on the Killing of Minnesota Nurse, Alex Pretti

The Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment (CANE) stands in solidarity with our American colleagues in anger and horror at the murder of our fellow nurse, Alex Pretti, this week in Minnesota. Alex was murdered while trying to help others and for speaking up for peace. His actions mirror what millions of Americans are doing every day, and what millions of nurses around the globe do every day: standing up for one another.

As nurses, we are known for our strength, compassion and advocacy on behalf of the patients and families we serve. We believe in speaking up and standing shoulder to shoulder with our neighbours in demanding justice.

CANE invites all Canadian nurses and allies to join the National Nurses United candlelight vigil on Wednesday, January 28th at 7:30 P.M., either in spirit, virtually or by simply lighting a candle in our homes. Let’s shine our lights around the globe in remembrance of Alex and in solidarity with those striving for peace, justice and safety for all.
