Challenges I faced growing up in a Northern First Nations Community

In this session, Dwight Ballantyne will be sharing his personal journey growing up in a remote northern First Nation and how those experiences shaped the work he do today. Dwight will talk about the real-life challenges Indigenous youth face in remote communities—challenges most people don’t even know exist. Dwight will also talk about The Ballantyne Project and our #WeSeeYou campaign, which creates opportunities for Indigenous youth to gain life skills, explore education and career paths, and build confidence through week-long experiences in Vancouver, BC

We would like to reiterate that everyone is welcome to our UBCLC sessions.

Our events aim to embody a safe space for everyone of all different backgrounds to have their opinions and voices equally heard.

Dwight Ballantyne

I’m still just a rez guy at heart, even though I don’t live there anymore. I grew up in a northern First Nation in Canada and spent 21 years living that reality.

Now, I use my story to raise awareness about the challenges Indigenous youth and young adults face in remote communities. I do a 45-minute presentation called The Invisible Segment of Canada, where I share what life is really like growing up in the north.

I also work with northern First Nation communities through our #WeSeeYou campaign. We bring Indigenous youth from all over the country to Vancouver for a week of life experiences—everything from checking out schools and jobs to building everyday skills and confidence.
