This workshop is hosted by CASCADES in partnership with the Sustainable Nephrology Action Planning (SNAP) Committee (a Committee of the Canadian Society of Nephrology).
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is recognized as a major global health concern; the prevalence of CKD has increased by 16% from 2010 to 2019 globally. While it is recognized that the environmental changes associated with climate change are contributing to the prevalence of CKD, the treatment of CKD as a progressive disease is itself contributing to health sector greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants; the treatment of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is particularly resource-intensive. There are many upstream and downstream interventions that can reduce the environmental impact of kidney care while maintaining or even improving quality of care.
Over two highly interactive sessions, participants in this workshop will gain and share knowledge, develop skills, and forge collaborations that will help them advocate for and participate in a bottom-up and top-down shift toward more environmentally sustainable kidney care (ESKC). Participants will hear from care providers and administrators on the front lines of sustainability efforts and will workshop sustainability project ideas for their own settings.
This course is best suited to participants who are new to this work or who are starting sustainability projects.
As part of CASCADES’ core training offerings, this course is free of cost.
