World Cleanup Day

Description of Issue

A goal that crosses borders and defies religious and cultural differences. World Cleanup Day is one of the biggest civic movements of our time, uniting 191 countries across the world for a cleaner planet. On that day volunteers and partners worldwide again came together, despite the special requirements and many restrictions of Covid-19, to rid our planet of trash – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets.
World Cleanup Day on 15 September 2018 united more than 17,6 million people in 157 countries.
World Cleanup Day on 21 September 2019 united more than 21,2 million people in 180 countries.
World Cleanup Day on 19 September 2020 united more than 11 million people in 166 countries.
World Cleanup Day on 19 September 2021 united more than 8,5 million people in 191 countries.

Since 2018, World Cleanup Day has brought together millions of people for the biggest waste collection day in human history. In 2018, 17.6 million and in 2019, 21.2 million environment heroes joined in on an epic 36-hour green wave of cleanups across the globe – beginning in New Zealand and traveling around the world before ending in Hawaii.World Cleanup Day harnesses the power of people around the world to achieve incredible things by joining together. Its beauty lies in cooperation and collaboration: building bridges between disparate communities, and including all levels of society – from citizens to business, to government.

All these environmental heroes came out despite the challenges of 2020 and 2021.

Are you interested in participating in cleanups for World Cleanup Day? Please check the cleanup map and find an event close to you. If there a no cleanup events close by, consider organizing one by yourself. You can find instructions on how to by scrolling up this page. Or just crab a pair of gloves and bags and make an individual cleanup. Be part of the global movement of environmental heroes and register your effort!

Description of Action

Are you organizing or planning to run a cleanup event? Come and register your event and invite volunteers to participate. Your cleanup event will appear on the global World Cleanup Day map and you can share the link to your social media. In some cases we redirect you to the national page to register your event, but don’t worry – it will also appear on the global page. We can provide you with a lot of useful know-how materials on how to organise cleanups and also marketing materials to help you promote the event. You will get the link to the World Cleanup Day knowledge bank to help you create a successful community event. If you can’t organise an event on 17th September, you can still participate by registering cleanup events falling before or after World Cleanup Day.
